Well... it started when a new God ousted an old one called Bel Marduk, and took over, casting all of the other gods at the time down into hell, and recreating the world in his image. That split the original power of Bel, and other demons consumed the pieces of it for their own.

Um... to shorten this part, one of those pieces of Bel was either given or found it's way into one of the sons of the first humans that God created, Abel. That's the guy I'm reincarnated from.

And the story is that God wanted the best that Abel and his older brother Cain could offer him. Abel who was a shepherd, offered the blood of the first born of his sheep, and Cain who was a farmer offered the best of his crops.
[ But Kazuya exhales. This part is a little... shakey for him. He knows Naoya, knows that his cousinbrother is particularly sour about this. ]
God apparently didn't care about Cain's offering, or didn't like it. And so the story is that Cain got jealous and killed Abel. And for it he was cursed to reincarnate over and over, with his memories intact. And cursed to remember everything, always. And no matter what, no plants or crops will grow for him anymore.
[ A harsh punishment. An eternity of remembering, and Kazuya grips the sheets beneath his hands a little tighter.]
So Cain used his knowledge he'd accumulated over countless lifetimes to try and... kill god. The best way to do that was for all of the pieces of Bel, including Abel, who's soul I had a part of without even knowing, to join together to become the original Bel and fight and kill God.
